Explore the creative possibilities of working in a series by making one of your own. Students should come to the workshop prepared by creating a small piece from which build a series of two or three additional works. This should be something you are passionate about either in subject matter or in color scheme. This ‘idea’ should be created as your first thought on this theme. We will first evaluate all pieces made in advance and discuss their potential for development into a series. Students then form a plan of their own considering color, composition, and elements of design, such as contrasts of size, contrast of temperature, contrast of values, engaging the edge, negative space, etc. Each morning, using formal art considerations, you will discuss your piece, where you see yourself going with it, and make a plan for the following piece. We will do this for each piece as it develops ending with three or four pieces, including the one you bring, in the series. The number of pieces you complete will depend on the speed at which you work – finishing one or more is fine.

Think about bringing support materials. Photos of your idea or paintings or drawings that brought you to this idea. A book or poem maybe what started it all, a song, a dance, whatever inspired you bring along if possible.

About Katie Pasquini Masopust

For nearly 30 years Katie Pasquini Masopust has produced high quality contemporary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers. From her early beginnings as a painter dabbling in traditional quilt making, her work has evolved from structured Mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces to very painterly landscapes and abstracts executed with the finest fabrics and most creative stitching techniques.

Katie’s easy, energetic manner has made her a very popular teacher and lecturer. When not in residence at her studio in Fortuna, CA she travels the world presenting her contemporary quilting theories and techniques to classes; not only in North America, but in Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Awards and accolades have been numerous for Katie, culminating with her 2005 induction into a very select group of art quilt professionals who have earned the Silver Star Award presented by Houston Quilt Festival.
