Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting and drawing in which an artist studies a photograph and attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as possible in another medium.
In this five-day workshop, you will be reproducing Rembrant’s Repast still life using Melissa’s award winning techniques for transforming a photograph into a masterpiece of fiber art. You will learn to see as an artist does, select appropriate fabrics, build a pictorial quilt from an image using a raw edge applique method. You will then learn to enhance your work by adding depth, dimension and detail with inks.
Please note there is a supply fee of $10 for this workshop.
About Melissa Sobotka
Melissa’s unique style of quilting is expressed through a photo realistic technique that draws on her love of old master paintings. Much of her work is often influenced by spirituality and travel. Vibrant and realistic imagery is created by appliquéing numerous pieces of raw edge batiks and then enhancing them with inks to give them greater depth. Melissa’s vision is to be a catalyst for viewers to see, with new eyes, the depth of beauty in and around us.
Melissa’s work has been juried into national and international shows where she has been the recipient of many awards. Her work has received the Best of Show in the Houston International Quilt Festival, Mancuso’s World Quilt Show, and American Quilters Society Quiltweek, Charlotte. Melissa is a member of the Dallas Quilt Guild, the American Quilting Society and the International Quilting Association. Her art quilts can be found in many private collections, The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky as well as being featured in books and magazines.
