This workshop will focus on personal storytelling. The workshop will start with a short digital presentation full of inspiration and explanation of the simple processes Sue uses herself and Sue will then guide you through quick & easy ways to get started.

Sue Stone’s teaching style is one of individual, personal attention throughout the workshop. During the workshop you will learn how to combine images of people, text and other narrative elements which capture the essence of your story. You will start a piece of work which you will develop over the course of 5 days using your own drawings or photographs as inspiration and you will learn to use sampling as part of the process for developing your ideas.

The aim of the workshop is to encourage exploration and experimentation with different ways to tell your own story using images and anecdotes to convey ideas, thoughts and memories. By the end of the workshop you will have the necessary skills to develop your narrative work further. You will have the option to focus mainly on hand stitch or machine stitch or choose to combine both techniques. Sue is happy to advise you individually on working with your own photos or any particular images you may wish to use for future projects.

The workshop is suitable for all abilities. Hand stitching and/or hand/machine stitch – machine stitching is optional.

About Sue Stone

Sue Stone is a British artist who is best known for figurative, textural compositions that often feature a fish; a symbol of her heritage. She was born and raised in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire which was once a thriving fishing port on the east coast of England. She is the daughter of a Grimsby fish merchant and a seamstress who trained professionally as a tailor. Sue is a storyteller whose compositions often combine multiple images of people, place, and time to create the illusion of a journey through life. Her ideas are drawn from anywhere and everywhere; the seen, the heard, the experienced, her life observations and her Grimsby heritage. With its emphasis firmly on ideas, Sue Stone’s work often has a partial narrative which the viewer is invited to complete.

She is an avid collector of images. The accumulated textures, patterns, colors, texts provide an important source of understanding and awareness of the outside world. The unexpected and the often overlooked become a reference library consisting of many thousands of photographs. Sue returned to embroidery after a long career in clothing design and manufacture. Since 2006 her work has appeared worldwide in many magazines and books and has also been widely exhibited throughout the UK, and Europe, and in the USA, Pakistan and Japan. Sue is an exhibiting member of the internationally renowned 62 Group of Textile Artists, a Fellow of the UK Society of Designer Craftsmen and a member of the UK Society for Embroidered work.
