The Pastel Society of America and Hudson River Valley Art Workshops are excited to jointly offer a special destination workshop, with PSA Master Pastelist, Hall of Fame Honoree, and internationally recognized and respected artist, Sally Strand. This is a combination of Sally’s signature workshop, The Color of Light, along with her Paint-With-Me and Mentoring Workshop. Focused on color and light, Sally discusses optical mixing of layered color and how to truly see and identify color, especially subtle color. The effects of light on color, composition, and perception, as well as the use of different types of light are explored. Painting from still life in the studio, each participant will receive individual attention and critiques. While being mentored by Sally, participant will also have the opportunity to apply the lessons en plein air. All artists will benefit from in-studio projects that solidify valuable principles needed for outdoor painting.

In addition to easel time, indoors and out, this workshop will include a private tour of Olana, home of Frederick Church, noted Hudson River School artist. The tour will include a discussion on Church’s work and his use of light in his paintings. The class will paint during the day on the 250-acre natural landscape grounds. Participants will also enjoy a picnic dinner and return to their easels to paint a sunset overlooking the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River. On another day, the class will venture to some of the very same spots that inspired the Hudson River School painters.

Each participant will receive individual attention, mentoring, and critiques. Demonstrations, lectures, and a slide show are designed to help participant achieve intensely beautiful color. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to learn from this acclaimed Master from the West Coast!
