Have you always wanted to explore a looser, bolder approach to painting, but just weren’t sure how to accomplish this style in your own work? Exploring multiple subjects can be a great catalyst to discovering a more expressive approach in your work!
Help is on the way, because this workshop will empower you with successful strategies for loosening up your work with bold marks and fresh color. Using reference photographs and working from life during the workshop, we’ll explore the landscape and the portrait, and learn how to simplify diverse and often complex scenes and subjects into clear shapes, values, and edges. Then we’ll organize these shapes into strong design and color combinations using bold, expressive marks for a lush painterly look. As we develop our work, we’ll explore innovative approaches to color through the use of underpainting techniques and interpretive color strategies that will break you out of your routine!
Each morning, Alain will demonstrate a painterly approach to the subject from start to finish. Three mornings will be devoted to landscape demonstrations, and two mornings to the portrait. We’ll spend one landscape day outdoors studying en plein air. We’ll also spend one day studying the portrait from the live model. Throughout the workshop, students will work from their own reference materials as well as from life, beginning with exercises to loosen up your work and learn techniques to simplify the subject. Students will progress to loosely finished paintings by the end of the day. Alain will provide two constructive and encouraging group critiques during our workshop together that will focus on each subject respectively, the landscape and the portrait.
“I thought Alain was a fantastic instructor who was able to both instruct the whole group as well as offer individualized and personalized instruction.”
“Alain is a wonderful teacher. He gave clear & interesting examples & instructions & answered all our questions. His Demos were great! He was pleasant & very helpful always. I hope he returns to give more workshops in future. Especially Plein air & portraits.”
“Pastels were new to me, and I feel that I have a very good foundation for continuing my exploration of this medium. The workshop also highlighted areas that I need to work on for all art mediums (watercolor, oil, and pastel), and I received much individual attention in these areas. I never felt ‘left behind’. Alain expanded all of us wonderfully.”
