This experimental workshop will look at the different ways to combine stitched portraits with narrative elements in your work to tell a story. Sue will guide you through quick & easy ways to get started and share the simple processes she uses herself. The aim of the workshop is to encourage exploration and experimentation to capture the essence of the people and places whose story you wish to tell. You will develop your own narratives using your drawings or photographs as inspiration and integrate images, text and anecdotes in your work to convey your ideas, thoughts and memories.
The workshop will start with a short digital presentation which will look at story telling and the different techniques you could include in your work. During the workshop you will explore design and composition and the importance of sampling texture, pattern, and text.
You will choose whether to make one larger piece or start a series of small pieces of work to develop further at home. By the end of the workshop you will have the necessary skills to develop your own narrative work further.
This is primarily a hand/machine stitch workshop but you will have the option to focus entirely on hand stitch or machine stitch or choose to combine both techniques with appliqué and mixed media.
The techniques used in this workshop are suitable for all abilities.
A guide to choosing your starting images to use will be sent in advance of the workshop.

About Sue Stone
Sue Stone is a British artist who is best known for figurative, textural compositions that often feature a fish; a symbol of her heritage. She was born and raised in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire which was once a thriving fishing port on the east coast of England. She is the daughter of a Grimsby fish merchant and a seamstress who trained professionally as a tailor. Sue is a storyteller whose compositions often combine multiple images of people, place, and time to create the illusion of a journey through life. Her ideas are drawn from anywhere and everywhere; the seen, the heard, the experienced, her life observations and her Grimsby heritage. With its emphasis firmly on ideas, Sue Stone’s work often has a partial narrative which the viewer is invited to complete.
She is an avid collector of images. The accumulated textures, patterns, colors, texts provide an important source of understanding and awareness of the outside world. The unexpected and the often overlooked become a reference library consisting of many thousands of photographs. Sue returned to embroidery after a long career in clothing design and manufacture. Since 2006 her work has appeared worldwide in many magazines and books and has also been widely exhibited throughout the UK, and Europe, and in the USA, Pakistan and Japan. Sue is an exhibiting member of the internationally renowned 62 Group of Textile Artists, a Fellow of the UK Society of Designer Craftsmen and a member of the UK Society for Embroidered work.
