In this workshop with Sue Spargo, create a small wall quilt featuring a soft neutral, hand-dyed wool background with nine small vases filled with flowers. In advance of the workshop as homework, you will be asked to layer the background with neutral fabrics and vases. During the workshop, you’ll spend time embellishing the small vases, incorporating hand-dyed indigo fabrics, threads, and beads. Next, you will work to fill each vase with textural stems and leaves. Finally, Sue will teach her newest techniques as you create dimensional flowers using nine different methods. The finished size of the piece will be approximately 16” x 25”.
About Sue Spargo
Sue Spargo is a self taught textile folk artist and designer whose lush and rich work with wool, a needle and thread inspires so many.
Born in Zambia, Sue grew up in South Africa and lived in England as a young adult before moving to the United States in 1989. She credits her artistry to her father, who encouraged her creative pursuits and allowed her to explore many mediums, and her love of fabric to her mother, who got her interested in sewing as a child. Being surrounded by African art during her childhood inspires her use of simplistic folk-art motifs.
Her work has been shown in art museums and exhibitions around the world. Sue also teaches her techniques and creative process at workshops and retreats and has authored several books including Creative Stitching and Creative Texturing.
