A medium of great historical importance, egg tempera has been used to create some of the great masterpieces of art history. It is known for it’s beauty and refinement, for clarity of both color and detail, and for it’s outstanding longevity. The medium pre-dates oil painting, and is so stable, paintings created in egg tempera regularly outlast oil paintings hundreds of years younger. Perhaps most surprisingly, it is something anyone can make at home with the simplest of materials.

This comprehensive five-day workshop will be taught by the husband and wife team, Julio Reyes and Candice Bohannon Reyes. Julio and Candice are well known for the quality of their works in both egg tempera and oil, widely respected by their peers, have been actively showing for over a decade at some of the best figurative galleries in the US and abroad, and are collected internationally. They have been asked to share their expertise at both TRAC and FACE (Figurative Art Conference) as guest speakers. Their egg tempera workshops have garnered enthusiastic reviews, with attendees repeatedly sharing that it was the best workshop they had taken. This workshop offers the opportunity for in-depth work in egg tempera: students will spend five full days working on a painting of their own design. Julio and Candice will help with each stage of the painting, provide on-going discussion and critiques, and give daily painting demonstrations.

Demonstrations presented in this workshop include: How to mix egg tempera paint from scratch, what an ideal drawing for an egg tempera painting looks like and how to transfer any drawing/image to an egg tempera panel, a method for creating an ink wash underpainting, how to build an egg tempera painting from the first strokes to the last including: techniques for building color and light through layering, how to achieve soft transitions, dealing with edges, making corrections, expanding the value range, techniques for finishing, how to apply a nourishing layer (and when to apply it),how to polish a painting, what our preferred finishing treatment for egg tempera is. We will also demonstrate how to create a modern egg tempera panel using aluminum composite material, and show some fun alternative surfaces to work on.
Open to all levels of painters, from beginner to advanced. Students do not need ANY experience working with egg tempera before attending this workshop, and will come away with the knowledge necessary to explore working in egg tempera on their own.
