Old as the Egyptians and made most famous during the Renaissance, egg tempera painting is becoming increasingly popular with artists today. Tempera has unsurpassed luminosity, dozens of glazes can be applied in a day, and yet the medium also allows for meticulous linear details.
This comprehensive five-day workshop, taught by internationally recognized tempera painter, Koo Schadler, offers the opportunity for in-depth work in egg tempera. Participants will spend the workshop working on a painting of their own design. Koo will assist with the initial planning stages, provide on-going discussion and critiques, give painting demonstrations, and discuss the important design elements of old master painting.
Demonstrations presented in this workshop include: painting a portrait in egg tempera; creating granite, marble, and other textured surface; decorative and geometric patterns; incised lettering; oil glazing over tempera; and more.
Open to all levels of painters, from beginner to advanced. A demonstration on the essentials of working in egg tempera will be provided for beginning students.
Note: This workshop has a material fee of $75. All materials to create egg tempera will be provided by the instructor.
About Koo Schadler
Koo Schadler graduated from Tufts University in 1984 with a BA in Art History. After graduation she traveled throughout Europe and eventually settled in Florence, Italy, so she could look at Renaissance art daily. On returning to the states in 1986 she moved to California where she was introduced to egg tempera through artist Chester Arnold at the College of Marin.
In the 90’s Koo returned east and settled in a small town in Southern New Hampshire. For three years she studied classical oil painting with Numael and Shirley Pulido, while pursuing egg tempera studies on her own. Eventually she selected egg tempera and silverpoint as her primary mediums.
Koo is a Master painter of The Copley Society of Boston. She is a contributing editor at The Artist’s Magazine and a board member of the Society of Tempera Painters. Koo teaches painting and design workshops around the US and abroad. Her work is represented by the Arden Gallery in Boston, MA. Her paintings and drawings are in more than 400 private and corporate collections, and many museums nationwide. Her comprehensive book on egg tempera has been described as “one of the most concise and useful books on the art of egg tempera painting…should be on the bookshelf of every serious artist”.
