Emilie Lee

Landscape Painting & Drawing

May 29 - Jun 2, 2019

Medium: Oil

Level: All Levels

3-Day Outdoor/Studio Class

In this three day workshop, Emilie will offer what she has learned in her experience as a plein-air painter. Drawing on her background as a student of the classical realist atelier movement and her study of the Hudson River School artists, her teaching emphasizes a logical approach to the painting process. Practical goal-setting followed by a foundation of accurate drawing and an understanding of value, color, and composition will help simplify the painting process. Each day will begin with a demonstration followed by one-on-one instruction with each student on their own paintings. In her experience, landscape painting is an opportunity to slow down and practice mindfulness while delighting in the beauty of nature. In her workshops, Emilie likes to offer practical tips for calming the critical mind (we all have one!) stimulating curiosity, and enjoying the meditative process of painting outside.

Many of the same concepts Emilie teaches for painting can also be practiced with drawing, and she believes that the best way to get better at painting is to spend time drawing, so it’s a great option.

About Emilie Lee

Emilie Lee is a classically trained artist who's work is inspired by her adventurous life as an avid outdoorswoman and advocate for wilderness conservation. She earned a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004 and later studied for four years at the Grand Central Atelier in NYC where she was also a resident artist and instructor for three years after her training. During this time she spent six consecutive summers with the Hudson River Fellowship where she learned to paint landscapes in the tradition of the Hudson River School. After New York she moved to Burlington, Vermont where she taught anatomy, figure drawing, and perspective at Champlain College while also teaching private lessons and workshops in landscape painting, cast drawing, and portraiture. Today she lives in Santa Barbara, CA where she teaches plein-air workshops on the beach and enjoys painting outside all year round. Her artwork and travels can be found on instagram: @emilieleelee
