Collage and Watercolor

July 16 - 22, 2017

Medium: Watermedia
Level: All Levels
5-Day Studio Class

This workshop features both the development and use of incredibly rich, textured surfaces and how to go beyond the basics of paint application to create strong, vibrant, personality filled paintings.

"Build" becomes a key word, because the uniqueness of the surfaces lies in the variety of materials gathered for use in the process. Anything is usable: papers, fabrics, metals, cardboard, washi, paper towels, napkins, dried flowers, wood, string, lace and so on. Once this exciting surface is developed it is covered with white gesso and allowed time to dry.

Color can be applied with either transparent watercolor or acrylic paint - or both - or with other stuff. The sky is the limit!!! For painting, any type of image is appropriate from realism, to abstraction, to nonobjective materials.

Optionally, David also shows how to carefully construct a watercolor using preliminary sketches and value studies. Without learning fundamentals a great idea cannot be fulfilled to its potential. Technique is very important to this discipline, but it is the composition of your painting that will engage your viewer. When strong compositions and thoughtful technique are combined, it is an unbeatable combination. David will also demonstrate his methods of using multiple glazes of wet-into-wet passages to achieve unsurpassed brilliance as well as the use of masking agents to achieve jewel-like clarity.

David strongly believes that planning does not destroy spontaneity but rather creates opportunities. The process described above allows for stronger compositions, and therefore, stronger paintings. David wants participants to become aware that they are creating a work of art, not just applying paint to paper.

David Daniels is the watercolor instructor for the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, DC.   He is also a Professor of Painting at Montgomery College in Rockville MD, as well as teaching workshops around the world. His interactive approach and humor are often recognized as his strongest teaching tools.

Note: This workshop was originally to be taught by Gerald Brommer, but due to unforseen circumstances, he can not do it. David Daniels has taught this same workshop for us before, filling in for Gerald in 2015. Check out our blog to see what a wonderful experience it was for the students. Here is what the students had to say:

"Excellent instruction!" "It surpassed my expectations in many ways. David is a wonderful artist, a terrific teacher and a great inspiration." "Great teaching skills - learned a lot about color, values, and making my own paper." "I feel very happy about having taken this class. I learned much more about materials and techniques than I had known. And the food was delicious!"
